Personalize Messages with Template Tags

When composing messages, you can use template tags to personalize and insert contextual information into the messages that you send to your customers.

Let's take a look at an example:

The default abandoned cart preset

With this preset, you can see the usage of several template tags:

  • {ShopName} - the name of your Shop as configured within Shopify.

  • {FirstName} - the first name of the customer.

  • {CheckoutUrl} - the generated short URL that will take the customer back to their checkout to complete their purchase.

There are more template tags available for you to use, and they vary slightly depending on the type of message you're composing.

Inserting template tags

Let's take a look at the other available template tags for abandoned cart and how to insert them.

To insert template tags, simply:

  1. Click the message to open the editor.

  2. Click where you want to insert the template tag within the message.

  3. Click Tags.

  4. Click on the tag that you want to insert.

Advanced tagging: Defaults

Almost all template tags will have an associated value that will be inserted when the message is generated. If you want to set a default value for a tag in case there is no value, you can use the following syntax:

{TagName:default value}

For example, to compose a message where "valued customer" is inserted if FirstName is missing, your message might look something like:

Dear {FirstName:valued customer}, ...

That's all there is to it! We hope you found this guide useful!
